Summary: Zhang Mingman, chief surgeon, director of Hepatobiliary Surgery Department, Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. The Children's Hepatobiliary Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center established by Zhang Mingman is the first unit in China to have the qualification for liver transplantation in a domestic children's hospital. According to incomplete data, since he presided over the liver transplantation work in 2006, as of October 11, 2023, the total number of liver transplants in the hospital has reached 370, and the annual number of children's liver transplants has ranked fourth in the country for two consecutive years. In August 2022, the hospital officially obtained the qualification for kidney transplantation, becoming the fourth children's specialty hospital in China to obtain the qualification for kidney transplantation. The hospital's kidney transplant wards have also been completed one after another, and it is the largest kidney transplant ward in children's specialty hospitals in the country. The hospital will build a large organ transplant center and become a children's organ transplant center in the western region.

In view of the broader background of the Chinese Communist Party's state crime of organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners, since the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is involved in the crime, Zhang Mingman, the director of the hospital's Hepatobiliary Surgery Department, is a major suspect.

Zhang Mingman, Chief Surgeon, Professor, and Doctoral Supervisor. Director of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department at Chongqing Medical University Children's Hospital. Currently serves as Deputy Leader of the Organ Transplantation Group of the Chongqing Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Organ Transplantation Group of the Chongqing Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Zhang Mingman established the Pediatric Hepatobiliary Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, which is the first pediatric hospital in China to obtain pediatric liver transplantation qualifications, having completed over 300 pediatric liver transplants. This center holds multiple national records, including the youngest age for pediatric liver transplantation, the lightest transplant weight, and the first pediatric liver segment transplantation in China. He has also completed three cases of pediatric autologous liver transplantation in China.[1]

Graduated from the Medical Department of Chongqing Medical University in 1983 and remained at the university, working in the General Surgery and Hepatobiliary Surgery departments of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University for over 20 years. From 2000, he studied and worked at the Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation Center of West China Hospital of Sichuan University, earning a doctorate in surgery from Sichuan University in 2005. In 2006, he was introduced as a "talent" to Chongqing Medical University Children's Hospital to head the pediatric hepatobiliary surgery department, where he developed various pediatric hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and splenic surgical techniques[2].

Since the initiation of liver transplantation work in 2006, as of October 11, 2023, the hospital had performed a total of 370 liver transplants. For two consecutive years, the number of annual pediatric liver transplants has ranked fourth nationwide. The youngest transplant recipient was 80 days old, and the lightest was 3.08 kg. The hospital has performed various pediatric liver transplant procedures, including living donor liver transplantation, DCD liver transplantation, liver segment transplantation, split liver transplantation, and auxiliary liver transplantation. In August 2022, the hospital officially obtained kidney transplantation qualifications, becoming the fourth pediatric specialist hospital in China to do so. The pediatric kidney transplant ward, now the largest of its kind in the country, has also been completed. The hospital aims to establish a major organ transplant center, enhance clinical service capabilities for organ transplantation, and promote a multidisciplinary collaboration model, positioning itself as a children's organ transplant center in the western region.

The Hepatobiliary Surgery Department of the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is currently the largest pediatric hepatobiliary surgery department in children's hospitals nationwide and the first to obtain pediatric liver transplant qualifications. Child patients for liver transplant come from various provinces and cities in the central and western regions, including Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Hubei[3].

The number of liver transplants performed by in hospital has gradually increased from fewer than 10 cases per year to 12, 27, 41, 55, 63, and continues to rise. Pediatric hepatobiliary and pancreatic disease treatment techniques based on pediatric liver transplantation have been promoted in more than 40 units nationwide, including in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Yunnan, Guizhou, Xi'an, Sichuan, and various districts and counties of Chongqing[4].
