Zeng Fanjun
Zeng Fanjun, male, director of Organ Transplant, Hainan Medical College Second Affiliated Hospital, chief surgeon, and associate professor.
He graduated from Beijing University of Medical Science in 1984 and started working at the Institute for Organ Transplantation, Tongji Hospital in the same year. He is engaged in clinical work in organ transplantation, and witnessed the pioneering and developmental stages of China’s organ transplantation.
In 1990, he became deputy director of the clinical department, in charge of kidney transplantation. Under his supervision, the number and quality of cadaveric kidney transplantation in Tongji Hospital was leading in the country, and the number and quality of living donor kidney transplantation ranked first in the country. In 1999, he became the director of the clinical department, and started clinical liver transplantation and achieved excellent results. At the same time, he was also involved in joint pancreas-kidney transplantation, heart transplantation, etc. He is one of the first generation organ transplant specialists in China[1]. His expertise is all abdominal parenchymal organs transplantation, such as minimally invasive kidney transplantation, liver transplantation, infant donor kidney transplantation, and pancreas-kidney transplantation, etc [2]. He made important contributions to the improvements of liver and kidney transplant surgeries.[3]
Tongji Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology is the birthplace of transplantation in China. Wuhan Tongji Hospital has been consistently leading in China’s organ transplantation area[4], and the number of kidney transplants ranks first in China.[5] In a recorded telephone interview with WOIPFG, a doctor at Tongji Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology directly admitted to using Falun Gong practitioners' organs. “With inmates such as Falun Gong practitioners, it’s guaranteed to have sufficient living donors.” “Organs were taken before the donor died.[6]” A relative of a doctor of this hospital said that there were many donor organs, and (before it was exposed), they went into overtime every day to do transplant surgeries[7]. The hospital performs thousands of kidney transplants every year. A Kwongwah Daily article carried by news.sina.com in 2001 said, Wuhan, an important city in central China, is allegedly the largest organ transplant center in the nation, with Tongji Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology the most famous, which is one of the earliest and the most authoritative hospitals engaged in living donor kidney transplantation, doing thousands of transplants every year. The hospital’s official website boasted having the largest number of living donor kidney transplant recipients (i.e. patients waiting for kidney transplant surgery) [8]. As such, the number of organ transplants at the hospital as revealed by this report obviously did not match the number of organ sources claimed by the CCP government.
In 2017, Hainan Medical College Second Affiliated Hospital established the Hainan Medical College Transplant Medicine Research Institute, which has a basics department and a clinical department.[9] On April 25, 2018, Huang Jiefu, former vice minister of the Ministry of Health and chairman of the Chinese Human Organ Donation and Transplantation Committee, Guo Yanhong, deputy director of the Medical Administration Bureau of the National Health Commission, and Zheng Shusen, president of Shulan Hospital, came to the hospital to guide the organ transplant work and proposed that the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical College should carry out major organ transplants such as heart, lung, liver, pancreas, and kidney, and build it into a training base for transplant medical talents in the countries along the Belt and Road policy.[10] Professor Wang Yi, chairman of the Fourth Organ Transplantation Professional Committee of Hainan Province and president of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical College, said that efforts should be made to build Hainan into a training base for organ transplant doctors in the countries along the Belt and Road and an international transplant science research center.[11]
In June 2018, Zeng Fanjun joined the organ transplant team to prepare for the establishment of an independent organ transplant department. On July 31, 2018, the Department of Organ Transplantation was formally established with Zeng Fanjun appointed as its director.[12] It has 34 beds (including 8 transplant ICU beds); 8 transplant specialists, 4 anesthesiologists, 2 intensive care specialists, and 4 specially-appointed cardiopulmonary transplant specialists.[13]
On May 15, 2021, a reporter learned from the 2021 annual meeting of the Organ Transplantation Professional Committee of the Hainan Medical Association that in 2020, member units of the Fourth Hainan Organ Transplantation Professional Committee completed a total of 138 organ transplant operations, of which 29 were liver transplant operations, 99 kidney transplantation, 3 pancreas-kidney transplants, 1 heart transplants, and 6 lung transplants.[14]
From the opening of the department on July 31, 2018 to March 2022, the liver transplant team of the Second Hospital of Hainan Medical College performed a total of 106 liver transplant operations.[15] From the beginning of 2022 to September, 154 organ failure patients received transplants.[16]

Summary:
1. Our hospital used to be a designated hospital.
2. Our Director Zhou does not work in the outpatient clinic. Director Jiang comes on Mondays and President Wang comes on Wednesdays.
3. For pneumonia examinations, the patient has to pay the clinic fees. CT scans may cost several hundred yuan.
4. The number of transplants for patients during the pandemic was relatively low, but we were still doing it. We will do it as soon as there are donors.
5. Last year, we did about 100 or 200.
6. Q: Are there any Falun Gong donors?
A: I don’t know. We nurses are not in charge of the donors. We don’t know the basic information about the donors. So if you want to know anything about the donors, you can ask the doctors.

The Organ Transplant Center of Shanxi Bethune Hospital is one of the "three major medical centers" that the government focuses on in its major construction of regional medical institutions. The hospital appointed Professor Zeng Fanjun of Tongji Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology as the director of the Organ Transplant Center.
At present, the Organ Transplant Center of Shanxi Bethune Hospital has 2 chief surgeons, 4 deputy chief surgeons, 4 attending surgeons, 8 resident surgeons, 17 nurses, and a designated blood purification and testing team. The Organ Transplant Center has 80 beds on two floors[18].
After obtaining the national organ transplant qualification in July 2021, the Organ Transplant Center of Shanxi Bethune Hospital quickly carried out various organ transplants including lung transplants, pancreas transplants, and kidney transplants. In more than two years, it has completed 173 kidney transplants, including 32 relative transplants and 20 pediatric kidney transplants. The youngest transplant patient was only 4 years old.
