Personal Profile: He is a member of the Organ Transplantation Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a standing committee member of the Organ Transplantation Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and a deputy director level member of the Organ Transplantation Branch of the Hubei Provincial Medical Association. He is also an editorial board member of various magazines, including "Chinese Journal of Transplantation (Electronic Edition)", "Organ Transplantation", and "Journal of Wuhan University (Medical Edition). He has been engaged in organ transplantation for fifteen years and has so far completed nearly a thousand kidney transplants on uremia patients[1].
Wuhan University People’s Hospital is one of the first medical institutions in China to carry out organ transplants, and various organ transplant surgeries have been performed there[2]. Kidney transplantation is a specialty of its Urology Department, with the number of transplants ranking first in Hubei Province[3]. The hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Wuhan City that does organ transplants. In 2006, a witnesses stated that Wuhan Tongji Hospital, Hubei Province People’s Hospital, and Wuhan Army General Hospital were the largest hospitals in Wuhan engaged in organ transplants, mainly kidney transplants[4]. In 2006, during a WOIPFG telephone investigation, both Wuhan Tongji Hospital and Wuhan Army General Hospital admitted to using organs from Falun Gong practitioners[5].
The hospital's urology department performs kidney transplants, and by 2015, the hospital had performed more than 600 kidney transplants, and also performed liver, heart and lung transplants during the same period. Under Zhou Jiangqiao's advocacy, the Organ Transplantation Department of Wuhan University People’s Hospital was officially established on June 29, 2015.
At present, the hospital's annual number of kidney transplants ranks among the top in China. In 2018, the hospital performed 412 kidney transplants, ranking sixth in the country. In 2019, the hospital performed 483 kidney transplants, ranking second in the country, and 42 heart transplants, ranking fourth in the country. As of September 2022, more than 2,000 patients had received kidney transplants in the hospital.[6]
