Sun Xuyong
Sun Xuyong, born in November 1970 in Hezhou City, Guangxi, male, 50 years old, doctor of medicine, second-level professor, chief surgeon, doctoral and master's supervisor of Guangxi Medical University; visiting professor and doctoral supervisor of Army Medical University (formerly the Third Military Medical University). Specially appointed expert of the former emergency office of the autonomous region.
Formerly the dean of the Transplantation Medicine Research Institute of the 303rd Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, he is currently the director of the Transplantation Medicine Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, the director of the Guangxi Transplantation Medicine Engineering Technology Research Center, and the director of the Key Laboratory of Organ Donation and Transplantation Research of the Guangxi Health Commission. Vice President of the Organ Transplantation Surgeon Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. His academic positions include member of the Expert Committee of the National Health Commission's Kidney Transplant Quality Control Center; member of the Expert Committee of the National Health Commission's Donated Organ Quality Control Center; Vice Chairman of the Human Organ and Tissue Donation Professional Committee of the Chinese Association for the Promotion of Human Health Science and Technology; Vice Chairman of the Organ Transplantation Rehabilitation Professional Committee of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medicine Association, etc.
Sun Xuyong graduated from the Department of Clinical Medicine of Guangxi Medical University in July 1994. From September 2000 to July 2006, he studied for a master's and doctoral degree in the Department of Organ Transplantation of the Department of Surgery at the First Military Medical University (now Southern Medical University) under the tutelage of Yu Lixin. In 2004, he founded the Organ Transplant Center of the 303rd Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, in 2010 he founded the Transplant Medicine Research Institute of the 303rd Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, in 2013 he founded the Guangxi Key Laboratory of Transplant Medicine, in 2017 he founded the Guangxi Transplant Medicine Engineering Technology Research Center; in 2016 he founded the National Health and Family Planning Commission's "Planting Trees in China-National Demonstration Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation", and in 2018 he founded two training bases for kidney transplantation and pancreatic transplantation surgeons of the National Health Commission.
In recent years, the clinical scale of the organ transplant team under his leadership has remained in the forefront in the country: an annual average of 300-400 kidney transplants, 50-100 liver transplants, 33 combined liver-kidney transplants, 69 combined pancreas-kidney transplants, and several heart and lung transplants. In July 2012, the team was the first to complete a lung transplant in Guangxi, and the first to complete a combined heart, liver, lung, kidney and multiple organ transplants. Currently, the overall clinical organ transplant scale is at the forefront in the country.
The 923rd Hospital of the Joint Logistics Support Force of the People's Liberation Army (formerly the 303rd Hospital of the People's Liberation Army), where he worked before, completed the first liver transplant in 2004 and became an independent institution. In 2005, the first combined liver and kidney transplant was completed. In 2006, the organ transplant building was put into use. In 2009, the first heart transplant was completed.[1] In 2010, the Transplantation Medicine Research Institute and the Autonomous Region Transplantation Medicine Key Laboratory Cultivation Base were established. The transplantation center is a member unit of the Ministry of Health's Liver Transplantation Scientific Registration System, the only member unit of the Ministry of Health's Kidney Transplantation Scientific Registration System Management Committee (CSRKT) in the Guangzhou Military Region and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and a transplantation medicine research institute integrating clinical, teaching, and scientific research.[2]
Sun Xuyong retired from the military in August 2018 and continued to work in organ transplantation at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University in April 2019, creating the organ transplantation discipline.
In 2020, the hospital established the Transplantation Medicine Center; was approved as the Guangxi Health Commission's Key Laboratory for Organ Donation and Transplantation Research; and built the Guangxi Transplantation Medicine Engineering Technology Research Center with the Joint Logistics Support Force of the People's Liberation Army; and was approved as the Guangxi Medical High-level Talent "139" Project Organ Transplantation Discipline Leader Training Talent. [3]
The hospital's Transplantation Medical Center received qualification approval from the National Health Commission on October 25, 2019, becoming the only unit in Guangxi and one of the few in the country that has obtained qualifications for five organ transplants: heart, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas. Since the first organ transplant operation was performed on November 3, 2019, until February 21, 2022, Professor Sun Xuyong's team had performed 1,000 organ transplants.
Among these 1,000 organ transplants, there were 13 liver-kidney combined transplants, 22 pancreas-kidney combined transplants, 2 heart-kidney combined transplants, 1 liver-pancreas-duodenum organ cluster transplant, and 33 extremely high-risk organ transplants under ECMO support. [4]
As of January 2023, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University has completed 1,468 transplant operations[5]. It is also reported that in 2018, the Transplantation Medicine Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University was established. As of March 2021, it had completed more than 4,000 organ transplants, ranking among the top in the country, and can perform liver, kidney, and multi-organ combined transplants. [6]

Summary: Regarding the allocation of organs, "we first select good quality organs for our own use." The transplant team is very strong. The wait time is one or two days to one or two weeks. Donors are abundant and always available. Many donated livers are assigned elsewhere. Three to four hundred kidney transplants are performed every year.

On May 30, 2017, Liao Jixiang, a liver transplant surgeon and organ coordinator at 303 Hospital, said that the transplant department is actually the "Institute of Transplant Medicine" and is a fairly large transplant center that does kidney, liver, heart, lung and pancreas transplants. The center has an ICU and anesthesia section. There is Ackerma which is famous in the country. Organ allocation starts at 303 Hospital, and we pick the good quality ones first for our own use. Our advantages are: first, the quality of the donor liver is definitely better than others, and second, it is definitely faster.[7]

On June 11, 2017, Liao Jixiang said: the source of organs is not the Red Cross, it is allocated by the state. The national organ allocation system network has access passwords, and its data are managed by designated personnel.[8]

2. The transplant team is very strong.
Summary: Any type of transplant operation can be done. For each transplant operation, one person must die.

Summary.
1) So far this year, we have done almost 100 cases, and it's only May now! We usually have 15 to 20 donors per month.
2) We do almost 300 kidney transplants per year. Our number of kidney transplants ranks among top three in the country.
3) Of 100 donor livers obtained, our center may keep 20, and the rest of 60, 70, or 80 are allocated out. (There are not enough recipients, so the donor organs can't be all used)
4) "Because if you want to have a surgery, one person will have to be gone." (harvesting organ from living donor)
5) Liver transplant for O blood type can be done within a month.
6) The government does not allow you to know donor's information.
7) I guarantee to you that the quality of the donor organ, for sure, is very good. Because for so many years...that, that, that is to say, in the past there were such...we used to have a lot, we used teenagers or people 20 plus years old, or kid.
8) The quality of organs from the judiciary is not necessarily better than the quality of those from brain-dead donor. The organs from the judiciary at least have to be holstered and have to be in cardiac arrest for a few minutes, twenty minutes. And with brain-dead donation, that part of time is now gone.
9) we now do transplants using organs from brain-dead donors, according to the state policy, and for the time being we have more than we need.
10) Dong Jianhui is now in charge of this donation, and he is also leading a team.
11) The president of the hospital himself does the transplant.

3. Waiting time is one or two days, or one or two weeks; the donor is available at any time, many liver donors are channeled out

Summary: Donors are all those brain dead. The quality of these organs can be guaranteed. Waiting time for donors will be very fast, very fast, very fast! Donation volume last year was more than one hundred cases, an average of one in every three days. More than two hundred cases of kidney transplants were done. This year, there should be more than last year. In less than six months, there are more than eighty cases. There are more than 100 kidney transplants now. There are more than 30 liver transplants. 4. “We have more than 100 beds, abundant donors, and three to four hundred kidney transplants per year”

Summary: Last year there were about three hundred kidney transplants. We now have about one hundred inpatients in the hospital. 5. The transplantation scale has been expanded, with a team of good surgeons sent to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University to open a transplantation center
The vice president of No. 303 Hospital in Nanning and director of the transplant center, Sun Xuyong in recent years led the main transplant team to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University to carry out transplants. They are now doing three to four hundred cases per year and thirty to forty cases per month.[20]

A: This is the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University. The members on our team all came from the original No. 303 Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and every doctor can do surgery. Our department just came from the No. 303 Hospital, it was opened last year, and there’s no clinic yet. Actually, the name of our director (Sun Xuyong) is known to many hospitals throughout the country; transplantation departments all know it.

IV. Medical papers show that the hospital harvested organs from 76 children, and therefore is suspected of living donor organ harvesting.
A medical paper published in the 2016 No. 8 issue of "Chinese Journal of Hepatobiliary Surgery" showed that from August 2007 to December 2015, the hospital performed combined abdominal organ resection on 76 children with the warm ischemia time as short as 3 minutes, [22] is therefore suspected of living donor organ harvesting. A zero or ultra-short warm ischemia time means heartbeat and blood supply exist when an organ is removed, which equals harvesting organs from living people. Generally, this is possible only when harvesting organs from brain-dead or living people. The warm ischemia time of the cases described in the paper was only a few minutes, proving that the liver and kidney harvesting process was one of living donor organ harvesting.
