Zhang Xiaodong
Zhang Xiaodong, male, director and chief surgeon of the Urology Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital. Zhang is also the deputy secretary-general of the Management Committee of the Chinese Renal Transplant Scientific Registration System, member of the Organ Transplant Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and permanent member of the Organ Transplant Branch of the Beijing Medical Association. He once worked as a professor in the Department of Urinary Surgery, Beijing University People’s Hospital. At the end of 2004, he started to serve as the deputy director of the Institute of Urinary Surgery, Capital Medical University, and the director of the Urology and Nephropathy Clinic and the director of the Department of Urinary Surgery in Beijing Chaoyang Hospital.[1]
At the end of 2004, Zhang Xiaodong, as part of a talent recruitment progrom, joined the kidney transplantation team of the Urology Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital. His work focus shifted from urinary dysfunction to kidney transplantation, which made a qualitative leap in kidney transplantation in the Urology Department. At present, a relatively mature team has been formed in the kidney transplantation specialty. All doctors have a doctorate degree in medicine and there are 3 doctoral supervisors. As of November 2016, the cumulative number of kidney transplants performed by Zhang Xiaodong and his team was nearly 5,000, ranking among the top in Beijing for five consecutive years..[2]
The Department of Urology has developed rapidly. The pancreas-kidney combined transplantation was carried out in 1999. [3] The Urology Center of the hospital consists of Ward One, Ward Two, West Ward and Outpatient Center, with a total of 112 open beds[4]. The annual outpatient volume is more than 100,000, the annual inpatients volume is more than 2,500, and the annual operation volume is more than 2,000. The hospital claims that from 1998 to 2000, its number of kidney transplants ranked first in China for three consecutive years.[5]

Investigator: Then generally speaking, when you take organs from a donor, you won’t just take a kidney, you will also take the heart, liver as well as the kidney. How long does this process take?”
Dr. Li: About three or four hours.
Investigator: It takes three or four hours to get this organ from disinfection, draping to completion, right?”
Dr. Li: Right, right, right.
Investigator: Sometimes you get the organ directly from the donor, and sometimes you get it through an intermediary, that is, get it from outside and use it in your hospital. Now you don't need an intermediary, right?
Dr. Li: We still do, possibly. But generally they are all like that.
Investigator: The organs obtained from an intermediary are also the normal organs of Falun Gong practitioners. The source of the organs is the same, right?
Doctor Li: Yes.
Investigator: My question is, the ones obtained through an intermediary are the same as ones you take, right?”
