WOIPFG’s Investigative Report on the Alleged Organ Harvesting of Living Falun Gong Practitioners at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University and Its Staff Members Suspected of Participation
Address: No. 600, Tianhe Road, Tianhe District, Guangzhou
On May 23, 2007, this hospital was designated by the Ministry of Health to carry out liver transplantation,[1] and was promulgated by Guangdong Province in 2004 as a Grade A hospital for liver and kidney transplantation.[2] Doctors from Guangxi Minzu Hospital testified that the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University could find such Falun Gong donors.[3] This hospital participated in criminal activities of killing and stealing organs. Telephone investigations showed: a large number of transplants, many transplant teams, suspected of live organ harvesting. The doctor on duty at the Lingnan Hospital of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University admitted that the source livers must be taken before the donor’s death, not after.
I. The liver transplant center of this hospital is a national key discipline of the Ministry of Education and a national key clinical specialty of the Ministry of Health,[4] an affiliated unit of the Guangdong Organ Transplant Research Center, and a national level organ transplant diagnosis, treatment and research center
The Liver Transplant Center of this hospital is the main unit of the "Liver Transplant Center of Sun Yat-Sen University Organ Transplant Institute" and is also an affiliated unit of the "Guangdong Provincial Organ Transplant Research Center”.[5] “Their liver transplantation technology represents the first-class level of liver transplantation in China, and the total number of liver transplantation cases is at the leading level in China. It is currently one of the fastest-growing and best-growing liver transplant centers in China."[6] The center claims to have built a national-level organ transplantation diagnosis, treatment and research center with outstanding specialties, leading in South China, radiating to Hong Kong, Macao and Southeast Asia, first-class in China and having considerable international influence.[7] The hospital's kidney transplantation also ranks among the top in China and in Guangdong Province.[8]
II. Large quantity of liver transplantation cases
1. The large quantity of of liver transplantation inferred from the number of hospital beds and the turnover rate of the center
The Liver Transplantation Center of this hospital has five professional focus areas including liver transplantation, pancreas, small intestine and combined organ transplantation, and transplant intensive care medicine. There are five wards, one transplant radiology interventional diagnosis and treatment group, one transplant ultrasound diagnosis and treatment group, one specialized laboratory and one biological treatment center for organ transplantation, with 113 open beds currently.[9]

2. Chen Guihua personally performed nearly 3,000 liver transplant operations in this hospital
The current honorary president of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and professor of liver transplantation, Chen Guihua, has accumulated experience in nearly 3,000 liver transplantation operations in this hospital.[10]
III. The hospital has a strong team of liver and kidney transplant doctors
The list of transplant doctors in this hospital released by WOIPFG in 2014 included 28 liver transplant doctors.[11] Among them, there are 6 chief physicians, 7 associate chief physicians, 2 attending physicians, and 13 others, totaling 28.
According to "Southern Magazine" on February 23, 2006, Chen Guihua, the dean of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, completed 246 cases of liver transplantation within one year in 2005.”[12] On the night of February 10, 2004, four liver transplants were performed simultaneously, with Dean Chen Guihua being the chief surgeon.[13] Chen Guihua completed 246 cases of liver transplantation in one year, while having busy administrative and management tasks as the hospital dean. The hospital has a total of 28 doctors engaged in liver transplantation, which can form multiple liver transplant teams.
Figure 2 Snapshot of Southern Magazine’s webpage
The Department of Kidney Transplantation currently has 8 full-time kidney transplant clinicians, including 4 with senior professional titles, 3 with intermediate professional titles, and 1 with junior professional titles; 6 of them have doctor's degree, the remaining 2 have master's degree, and 3 have overseas study experience; giving strong technical skills and go talent tier,.and the chief surgeons have experience in hundreds of operations.[14]
The Research Institute of Organ Transplantation of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University stated that “the number and quality of kidney transplants are continuously increasing every year. It is expected that the number of kidney transplants in our hospital will reach more than 200 cases per year in the next few years, ranking among the top in China and Guangdong Province.” [15]
IV. Doctors at Guangxi Minzu Hospital testified that the hospital used Falun Gong donors
Subject of investigation: Lu Guoping, doctor of Guangxi Minzu Hospital
Investigation time: May 22, 2006
In 2008, the Chinese embassy and consulate in Canada released a TV program produced by Hong Kong Satellite TV Chinese Channel, which interviewed some "participants" based on the CCP's denial of live organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners. In the TV program, Lu Guoping, a doctor at Guangxi Minzu Hospital, admitted that he was the person interviewed over the phone on May 22, 2006, but denied what he had said. However, Lu Guoping has obvious stuttering accent, and the investigation recording is more than half an hour, impossible to manually falsify. Therefore, the video of the CCP’s rebuttal has become excellent evidence for identifying the parties involved. Chinese embassy and consulate released the video, effectively testifying the authenticity of the live harvesting. (Recording 1: MP3; Transcript Download: pdf37)
