WOIPFG’s Investigative Report on the Alleged Organ Harvesting of Living Falun Gong Practitioners at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University and Its Staff Members Suspected of Participation

Preface

The hospital is one of the first to receive the Ministry of Health's kidney transplant qualification and built a national kidney transplant center. Shen Zhenya, Director of Cardiovascular Surgery and Research Unit, said: “We also have Falun Gong’s (organs). There should be one such case this year.” In the phone investigation in 2017, when asked if the inmate organ was still available as before, the transplant doctor answered, “Yeah, t’s available.. If the kidney source matches, it can be used. Just go to the prison to pick up.” Whereas the broader context of the CCP's state crime of live organ harvesting, this hospital is suspected of participating in the crime of live organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners and other groups.

Hospital: the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow

Address: No.188, Shi Zi Street, Suzhou; No.899, Pinghai Road, Suzhou, China

Hospital Profile: It is one of the first tertiary level-A hospital qualified by the Ministry of Health, and a provincial key hospital directly under the Jiangsu Provincial Health Planning Commission. The hospital has 37 clinical programs, 8 medical technology units, 96 doctoral supervisors, 175 master's supervisors and 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The main campus size is about 200 acres, with 3,000 beds planned.[1]

Ⅰ. National kidney transplant center with technology at the national leading level

The hospital is one of the first to receive the Ministry of Health's kidney transplant qualification and a national kidney transplant center. The Urological Surgery Program, with Hemodialysis and Kidney Transplant Center, is the key specialty of clinical medicine in Jiangsu Province and Suzhou City and has the right to grant master and doctoral degrees. It has strong technical faculty with 2 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors.[2] Professor Hou Jianquan, Chief Physician of Urological Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow, said, “The hospital’s kidney transplant technology is at the national leading level.” [3]

Ⅱ. The Hospital’s Tissue Typing Lab in Suzhou City claimed its influence has radiated to the transplant field at home and abroad and it reduced the time to find a suitable donor significantly.

The Hospital’s Tissue Typing Lab in Suzhou City claimed, “Lab’s tissue matching report can be accepted by international and domestic transplant centers and Chinese Bone Marrow Bank, and therefore it significantly reduced the time to find a suitable donor. The development and management of the lab technology platform is also on an international path. Its influence has radiated to the transplant field at home and abroad.” [4]

Ⅲ. Phone investigation shows the doctor acknowledged to use Falun Gong practitioners as donors and pick up organ directly at prison.

Position/Title: Director of Urological Surgery, Professor, Chief Physician, Vice Chairman of Organ Transplant Specialty of Jiangsu Branch of Chinese Medical Association

Personal Profile: Master of Medicine, 1989; Study at the University of Manchester, UK, Aug. 1992 to Dec. 1993; Senior Visiting Scholar in Urological Surgery Program of the University of Zurich, Switzerland, sent by the Ministry of Education; Professor Yan Chunin emphasized on research on kidney transplant and hemodialysis, tissue matching of kidney transplant, Lymphocytotoxicity test, PRA monitoring, monitoring of monoclonal antibodies, the whole process of kidney excision, trimming and transplant, management of postoperative immunosuppression, clinical research on the prevention of rejection and immune tolerance. SZDX-D1YY003 Ouyang Jun

Position/Title: Professor of Urological Surgery, Chief Physician, Associate Director of Urological Surgery Program

Personal Profile: Practiced medicine at Urological Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow since 1986; promoted as Chief Physician in 2004. Studied at Montreal University and McGill University Medical Center in Canada on a state-sponsored study abroad program from 2000 to 2002. Visiting fellowship at AKH Hospital of Medical University of Vienna, Austria and Donau Hospital in 2010. Specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney transplant. [10]

SZDX-D1YY004 Pu Jinxian

Position/Title: Associate Director of Urological Surgery, Associate Chief Physician, Associate Professor

Personal Profile: Graduated from Suzhou University School of Medicine in July 1983. Worked at Pediatric Surgery, the Children’s Hospital of Soochow University in 1984. Studied master of Urological Surgery at Suzhou University School of Medicine from September 1985 to July 1988. After graduation, worked at Urological Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow. Good at diagnosis and treatment of kidney transplant in the field of Urological Surgery. Developed homologous cadaveric kidney transplant. [11]

Personal Profile: Studied at Suzhou University School of Medicine in 1973. Master degree in 1982. Worked at General Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow. Studied surgery at Nagoya University Hospital, Japan from December 1983 to January 1985. Developed basic and clinical research of liver transplant and liver-kidney double transplants. Personal Profile: Bachelor of Medicine at Suzhou University School of Medicine in 1994; Master degree in 1999 (liver cancer). Doctoral degree of Surgery in 2004 (liver transplant). Specialized in liver transplant. [17]

Position/Title: Associate Director of General Surgery, Associate Chief Physician, Associate Professor

Personal Profile: Bachelor of Medicine at Suzhou University School of Medicine in 1996. Master of Surgery at Suzhou University in 2003. Doctoral degree of Surgery at Suzhou University in in 2010. Studied with professor Qian Haixin. Engaged in the basic and clinical research on liver tumor surgery and liver transplant. [18]

Personal Profile: Participated in major project “heterologous transplant” of National Natural Science Foundation of China. [19]

Personal Profile: Bachelor degree of medicine, 1995 and has worked on Thoracic Surgery since then. Master degree of Suzhou University School of Medicine in 2001. Studied thoracoscopic techniques at Beijing University People's Hospital in 2003. Doctoral degree of Suzhou University School of Medicine in 2010. Selected as the cultivator of "333 high-level talents training project" in Jiangsu Province in 2011 and as visiting Scholar studied at the Heart Center of Cleveland Clinic, US to major in coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery, large vessel "hybrid" techniques and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. SZDX-D1YY014 He Jun

Position/Title: Chief Technician; Researcher; Director of HLA High Resolution Matching Laboratory, Chinese Bone Marrow Bank; Associate Director, Key Laboratory of Transplant Immunity; Member of the Expert Committee of Chinese Bone Marrow Bank

Personal Profile: In 2011, the team led by He Jun became the first laboratory in China to be accredited by ASHI, the most authoritative institution in the international HLA field. It is also the authorized unit of the Ministry of Health's Class III technology "Gene Chip Diagnostic Technology" and Class II technology of Jiangsu Province. Suzhou HLA Matching Laboratory has undertaken for 8 consecutive years the HLA high-resolution genetic confirmation of the China Bone Marrow Bank for transplant hospital patients in East China. From 2006 to 2012, the laboratory passed 100% of the HLA high-resolution genotyping and HLA-specific antibody quality control samples tested by the Ministry of Health, UCLA University and ASHI. HLA matching report issued by Suzhou HLA Matching Laboratory can be directly accepted by international and domestic transplant centers and Chinese Bone Marrow Bank, and therefore it significantly reduced the time to find a suitable donor. The development and management of the laboratory technology platform is also on an international path. Its influence has radiated to the transplant field at home and abroad. Engaged in long-term experimental and clinical research in hematology. Main research areas are basic and clinical research on hematopoietic stem cell transplant and kidney transplant. [21]
