Tongji Hospital affiliated with Tongji Medical Collage of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (THTMCHUST) is one of the earliest and most authoritative hospitals performing kidney transplants with organs from living donors, China’s sina.com reports. It does thousands of kidney transplant surgeries per year[1]. The records of phone investigation by the WOIPFG of this hospital indicate that doctors from this hospital directly acknowledged the use of organs from Falun Gong Practitioners.
I. Hospital Overview
THTMCHUST is one of China’s tertiary level-A hospitals. According to its official website, the hospital is made up of the Main Hospital area, Guanggu Hospital area, and Zhongfa New City Hospital area. It has 62 clinical and therapy programs and departments, one national medical center, eight national key academic subjects, 30 national major clinical projects, 5000 beds, and more than 8000 employees – of which over 600 are at senior levels. The numbers of outpatients and emergency patients have stayed on top in Hubei Province[2].
THTMCHUST is the starting place of transplantation in China. In 2015, Huang Jiefu, deputy minister of Beijing’s public health ministry, stated at China Organ Transplantation Conference held in Wuhan, “without Hubei, without Wuhan, there would be no China’s organ transplantation.[3]” Wuhan Tongji Hospital has been consistently leading in China’s organ transplantation area[4].
II. THTMCHUST Performs Thousands of Kidney Transplants Every Year
A Kwongwah Daily article carried by news.sina.com in 2001 said, Wuhan, an important city in mid-China, is allegedly the largest organ transplant center in the nation, with Tongji Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology the most famous, which is one of the earliest and the most authoritative hospitals engaged in living donor kidney transplantation, doing thousands of transplants every year. The hospital’s official website boasted having the largest number of living donor kidney transplant recipients (i.e. patients waiting for kidney transplant surgery) [5]. As such, the number of organ transplants at the hospital as revealed by this report obviously did not match the number of organ sources claimed by the CCP government.
Figure 1. Snap shot of November 2011 Daily News Sina.com article
The CCP regime had always avoided talking about the donor source of organ transplant; it was not until after the international community exposed the evils of CCP’s systematic organ harvesting of living donors, that former CCP’s deputy minister of public health, Huang Jiefu, suddenly acknowledged at the World Conference on Liver Transplantation in July 2005 that the transplantation in China mostly used organs of death row inmates. The CCP’s sudden change of tone was questioned as trying to cover up the real source of donor organs. After that the CCP regime announced that they would not use the death row inmate organs starting from Jan.1st 2015, instead, they would use citizen -donor organs (though till now, Chinese organ donations are still very few. For details please refer to WOIPFG’s relevant report[6]). Be it death row inmate organs or so-called citizen donor organs, the discrepancies between the number of organs from these sources and the actual national organ transplant numbers are so huge that the CCP regime is unable to provide a credible answer. Therefore, it is not hard to understand why a lot of participating hospitals cut the numbers of reported cases of organ transplants. For example, up till Jan. 16th 2016, THTMCHUST website had still claimed that kidney transplant cases be about 3000[7], and its yearly transplants were no more than 200, both numbers are ten times less than thousands of kidney transplant surgeries per year which was previously reported by sina.com[8].
III. THTMCHUST acknowledged using organs from Falun Gong practitioners
“With inmates such as Falun Gong practitioners, it’s guaranteed to have sufficient living donors.” “Organs were taken before the donor died.[9]”
A relative of a doctor of this hospital said that there were many donor organs, and (before it was exposed), they went into overtime every day to do transplant surgeries[10].
1. “Those (organs) from Falun Gong practitioners can be used, it’s Jiang Zemin who gave the instructions at the time, so you dared to do it, is that right?” “Doctor Gong: That’s for sure”.
Subject of Investigation: Doctor Gong, Ward II of Heart Surgery, Tongji Hospital of Huazhong University of Medical Science.
Time of Investigation: Oct. 12th, 2015
Summary of Investigation: The conversation between WOIPFG investigator and Dr. Gong reveals the following two points: one, acknowledgment of using Falun Gong practitioners’ organs in transplant surgery; two, such surgeries were done because of Jiang Zemin’s instructions.
(Recording 1. Download: MP3; for transcript please refer to pdf19)[11]
Conversation excerpts:
Investigator: Oh, so organs used to be taken from jail and labor camp?
Doctor Gong: used to, yes.
……
Investigator: Oh,the (organs) from Falun Gong, right?
Doctor Gong: Yes, the ones not claimed by relatives, but it can’t be done anymore now.
Investigator: Eh, so they have done (organ harvesting) all along? In the past, many hospitals were involved in (doing organ harvesting) in massive quantities. It was allowed at the time. It was Jiang Zemin who gave such instructions. He was the state president back then, you know.
Dr. Gong: It could be done only when there were state documents.
Investigator: Right, right, he (Jiang Zemin) gave instructions to use (organs) from those who practice qigong held in jail, and (organs) from people like Falun Gong practitioners could be used. It’s Jiang Zemin who gave the instructions at the time, so you dared to do it, is that right?
Dr. Gong: That’s for sure.
2. “Could you use organ from living Falun Gong donors?” “Yes, sure.”
Subject of Investigation: A nurse from Urology Surgery at Tongji Hospital of Wuhan
Date of Investigation: March 30, 2006 (telephone number: 011862783662688)
(Recording 2, download: MP3; transcript download: pdf4)
The following excerpts are from a recorded conversation between a WOIPFG investigator and a nurse at Tongji Hospital of Wuhan:
Investigator: “Hello. Is that Tongji Hospital of Wuhan?”
Nurse: “Yes, it is.”
Investigator: Is this Urology Surgery? We need to have a kidney transplant.
Nurse: Yes, that’s right, this is the department for kidney transplants.
Investigator: When did you start doing kidney transplants on a large scale?
Nurse: We are the earliest to do it. We started a long time ago.
Investigator: How many operations can you do each year?
Nurse: Our hospital is one that has done the largest number of transplants. Our department has done the most in the entire Hubei area. We’ve done a lot, since we have ample donor organs.
Investigator: From a patient’s perspective, we hope to have living donor’s kidney,, we are looking for a transplantation using living prisoner’s organ, such as one of Falun Gong prisoners. Is it possible?”
Nurse: Sure.
Investigator: Do you have for sure sufficient organ supplies from living inmate donors, such as Falun Gong practitioners?
Nurse: Yes, sure. When you are ready, you can come over, and we will discuss it in detail.” Now let us try to know more about the transplantation scale in the hospital through its hardware and software constructions for organ transplantation.
3. Doctors and nurses at Jiujiang No. 1 People's Hospital in Jiangxi Province testified that the hospital's organs came from Wuhan Tongji Hospital, "The organs were removed when the donor was still alive."
Doctors and nurses at Jiujiang No. 1 People’s Hospital in Jiangxi Province testified: “Wuhan Tongji Hospital Organ Transplant Center, their organs arrive very quickly. They have connections to the army and the court, and many of the organs they use now come from the court. The organs were provided by Wuhan Tongji Hospital.[12]
"Wuhan Tongji Hospital Organ Transplant Center, their organs arrive very quickly"
Investigation subject: Doctors and nurses of Jiujiang No. 1 People’s Hospital in Jiangxi Province
Investigation time: September 2006
Investigator: Who are the donors for livers and kidneys you use in your transplants?
Hospital: Some from Guangdong, some from Wuhan. Patients need to register first so we can find a matching organ.
Investigator: Which hospital in Wuhan would you recommend?
Hospital: The transplant Center at Tongji Hospital. Patients at that center come from throughout the nation, and many from southeast Asia. They have connections with the military and the court, therefore they have no difficulty providing matching organs. Recently, many organs were provided by the court.
Investigator: Wuhan is far away. Can an organ still be used if transferred from there?
Hospital: We use airplanes. Usually the time limit is six hours from the time the organ is removed.
Investigator: Aren't there many prisoners?
Hospital: It is not that easy. A match has to be made, which includes not only the blood type. Matching the blood type is only the first step. Then a white blood cell antigen, PRA, and lymph test has to be done. We have no control over the organ source. Right now the court has strict control of it. There is nothing we can do if they don't want to sell them to us.
Investigator: I heard there are still many Falun Gong practitioners?
Hospital: That is the court's business and we don't know the details. Sometimes there are suitable ones and they give us a few. Your best bet is to go to Wuhan...

“Organs were taken before the donor died.[13]”
Investigation subject: Doctors and nurses of Jiujiang No. 1 People’s Hospital in Jiangxi Province
Investigation time: September 2006
Investigator: Did the organ come from a live source for the liver transplant your hospital performed on August 5?
Hospital: The transplant for that liver cirrhosis patient was successful. The liver source was from the transplant center in Wuhan.
Investigator: The liver from a live person for the transplant ensures success?
Hospital: Which live person would give a liver to you? They are all from prisoners. If they don't execute them, how can a live person willingly give you his liver? A person has only one liver.
Investigator: But livers from dead bodies can't be used. On your advertisement it says "live liver transplant."
Hospital: The prisoners are alive before being executed, aren't they? Then...
Investigator: So, their organs are removed before they are dead, aren't they?
Hospital: Yes, yes, yes. You can ask the transplant center in Wuhan. I'm very busy here... (Line cut)
